So I was looking on Pinterest for a gift idea for my little sister’s baby shower.
I stumbled across this picture and was thrilled! My little sister is expecting a girl and naming her Rose.
What could be more perfect than a diaper bouquet of “roses” for a little baby named Rose?!?
Here is what I did to re-create the diaper bouquet . . .
What you will need:
- About 75 newborn diapers (or any size, but you will need a bigger vase to make it look proportional)
- About 38 wood dowels
- About 75 little clear elastics
- About 16-1/2 yards of Ribbon (I only used 10 yards and just put it on some of the diapers)
- Foam Ball (mine was 6″, but it all depends on what size will fit on top of the vase without falling in the vase)
- Vase
- Vase Stuffers (I used baby lotion, baby wash, baby powder, butt paste)
- Decorative Ribbon
What to do:
– – First, cut all the dowels in half. – –
Then . . .
Grab 1 diaper, dowel, and elastic for each rose.
Open the diaper and place dowel as I have in the picture below.
Close the diaper and begin rolling the diaper around the dowel.
Hold the diaper with one hand as you open the elastic.
Place elastic around the diaper about 2/3 the way down.
This is the top view of the rolled diaper.
Cut a piece of ribbon and tie around where the elastic is.
I think I cut my ribbon 8″
As mentioned above, I only tied ribbon around about 1/2 of the diapers because I didn’t buy enough ribbon at the time. So if you are short ribbon don’t worry it will look great and no one will notice!
After all the diapers are rolled you can begin sticking them in the foam ball.
Place the foam ball on the top of the vase.
Stick in 4 roses so that the foam ball won’t move around while on the vase.
Now begin filling in, as I have done, around the top of the vase.
After the top of the vase is filled in, to secure the foam ball from moving, stick a rose in the top of the foam ball. Begin filling in around it and work down the foam ball.
(Try to only stick the rose in when you are sure on the location or else your foam ball will end up with too many holes and the roses won’t stay in the foam very well.)
Once you have filled all empty spaces it will look like this.
Lift up the foam ball carefully and place in the vase stuffers. Place foam ball back on the vase.
Tie a decorative ribbon around the vase. Note: Here is how to tie a bow perfectly.
Now you are ready to wow everyone at the baby shower with your diaper bouquet!
Great tutorial!!! The bouquet looks Georgeous!!!
Thank you Judy!
Hi Judy,
Since you have made this, why 75 diapers and only 38 dowels? Cutting them in half?? OY!
Length of dowels? Could you use lollipop sticks?
Thanks
Marie
Marie,
You will actually cut the dowels in half right at the beginning. This will give you 76 dowels to go with the 75 diapers. You will have an extra half-dowel that can be thrown away or kept for a future project. If you keep the dowels their original length they will be way too long.
I’m so sorry I can’t remember how long the dowels were cut in half. They might have been about 6″.
Give lollipop sticks a try! They might be too short and skinny for the diaper to wrap around very well, but I would love to hear if they work.
If you have any other questions please let me know. I will try to respond much more quickly. My e-mail notifications for comments has not been working, but is currently being fixed.
Love your rose arrangement! I am glad you have shared this. I hope to use this when our first grandchild is born after the first of the year (2016). We have waited 13 years for this child and are excited in every way. It has been many years since I bought a diaper and wondered if you would share with me what brand I should by to use for this arrangement. Thanks again and your talent shines in this project!!
Thanks again!
Congratulations Angie! Thank you for the question! I’m sorry I did not see it until now (I just had another little one to add to our family), I hope this answer isn’t too late. Any brand of diapers will work for this bouquet, but I used Pampers Swaddlers. I love how soft they are on the babies sensitive new skin. Good luck!
I was thinking about using wood koob sticks as they are pointed on one end. They may be to skinny but think I will try it..
Can u use kabob sticks instead of dowels!
Victoria,
I imagine that would also work very well.
Love this diaper bouquet! Am going to try making one for my niece’s baby shower coming up on 9/17. What size vase did you use and how wide was mouth of your vase for the number of diapers you used? Can you tell I’m not a crafting person–LOL!!
Peggy,
Thank you so much for the question! It has been about 5 years since I made this particular diaper bouquet, so I’m not sure what size the vase was. I just found the vase and foam ball at Walmart. The vase was maybe 8″ tall with an opening of maybe 5″??? Sorry I wasn’t more help.
Why do you attach roses to styrofoam off of the vase and not while styrofoam is resting in the vase.
I actually did attach the roses while the foam ball was resting in/on the vase. I just took the pictures from above, so the vase isn’t visible. I hope this helped! Thanks for your question!
Thank you Genevieve! I too found the vase and foam ball at Walmart. The vase is 8 inches tall with about a 5 3/4 mouth and the 6 inch ball fits into it very well. I was unable to find the clear elastic, so I’m going to use Stretch Magic white heavy (1mm) bead & jewelry cord, which I got at A C Moore (craft store). I was told the clear bead & jewelry cord they had wouldn’t be heavy enough. Since we don’t know the baby’s sex, we’re using fall colors for our color scheme. Thus I’m using a burnt orange ribbon, which should hide the white cord….hopefully!
How do you attach the tulle on the Bouquet.
Cathy,
I do not have any tulle on this bouquet. I have ribbon that is tied on the vase. I also have chiffon-looking ribbon ties on each diaper. I explain how I attached that in the description. If this doesn’t make sense, please let me know and I will try to help in another way.
Hi Genevieve
Do you have any trouble with the dowels hitting each other in the ball? I’m afraid to push to hard that I may break the vase! Any suggestions?
Thank you so much!
Patti
Patti- My dowels never hit each other in the ball. You don’t want to push the dowels through to the other side in order for them to hit the vase. So, your vase should not break.
Patti- I have not had trouble with my dowels hitting each other in the ball. You don’t want to push hard enough that the dowels come out on the other side of the ball. If your dowels stay within the ball your vase should not break.
This looks great want to make for my cousin’s shower. How long should the dowels be once they are cut?
Tracey- I’m so sorry I can’t remember how long the dowels were cut in half. They might have been about 6″.
I made a pink diaper bouquet recently and it turned out so pretty! I used diapers, pink till and pink flowers! The “mommy to be” and the other shower guests loved it. That’s gonna be my new go to shower gift!
I would love to see a picture!
