As a mom of three wild, fun-loving, energetic boys I constantly hear “well you know, boys will be boys. . .” as I relay to another mother or friend what one {or all of} the boys did recently. Sometimes I secretly wish to myself that boys would just sit down for a few minutes and enjoy a craft with me, or string together a beaded necklace, or even play house, but then I guess I would have a house full of girls, not boys. It takes a lot of work trying to keep boys clean, teaching them manners, and just keeping them from wrestling to roughly with their littler brothers.
. . . BUT. . .
Why not, every once in a while, be the mom that helps them discover and encourage what it means to truly be a little boy. Show them how to make a gooey dirt pie, or run in the sprinklers in your clothes, or even go out in a rain storm and show them how to jump in the biggest puddles?!?
I think it is good for a boy to see that their mom can be just as wild, dirty and crazy as they are. I have recently come to grips that I have a house full of boys, not girls and I need to let them be adventurous boys more often.
Today we had a warm summer rain storm and I decided puddle jumping was a perfect activity for my cooped up little boys. {I have had a sinus infection and cold for the last 10 days.} We walked around the block and I taught the boys to hunt out the biggest and best puddles for us to see who could create the biggest splash.
Note: The key with puddle jumping is to go inside and change into warm dry clothes the moment anyone begins to feel cold. If you stay out much longer than that you could easily have your little ones develop a cold.
My little 16 month old even had a complete blast. He tried jumping in the puddles just like his bigger brothers did. It was amazing to see the little wheels turning in his head to figure out what rain was. He watched his brothers splashing, water running out of a gutter and loved every minute of the rain exploration.
So next time there’s a rain storm that is creating big puddles take your little boys {or little girls} out for puddle jumping. See who can find the biggest puddle and who can make the biggest splash. Your kids won’t ever look at you the same knowing that you can be just as crazy as they are.
