Grandpa's Applesauce

One of my favorite things to eat as a child (and still is today) was “chunky” applesauce. My grandpa and grandma would can/bottle two kinds of applesauce every few years, using the apples from their trees. They would do the traditional smooth applesauce and then my grandpa would cut some of the apples into chunks to make a thick, chunky applesauce. I love eating this thick applesauce plain, with pork chops, and my personal favorite with a little cottage cheese. This amazing applesauce doesn’t need to be canned it can be made fresh and kept in the fridge for 1-2 weeks. Homemade Applesauce

Ingredients

Directions

Peel and cut apples into chunks. Place into pan with water (1/4 cup water to every apple). Cover with lid and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Simmer for 10-15 minutes, depending on how soft you want the apples. While simmering add sugar (1/2 to 1 teaspoon sugar to every apple) and cinnamon (1/4 teaspoon to every 3 apples). Serve warm* or cool and store in airtight container in fridge for 1-2 weeks. Makes about 3 cups.

*Note: I love making this applesauce, without the cinnamon, whenever we are having a pork roast or pork chops and then serving it warm with the pork.


Detailed Instructions:

Place into pan with water (1/4 cup water to every apple). Cover with lid and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Simmer for 10-15 minutes, depending on how soft you want the apples. While simmering add sugar (1/2 to 1 teaspoon sugar to every apple) and cinnamon (1/4 teaspoon to every 3 apples).

Serve warm or cool and store in airtight container in fridge for 1-2 weeks. Makes about 3 cups. Enjoy!
