My favorite wreath is 4 years old and has been moved 4 times. It is the wreath that I hang whenever I don’t have a holiday wreath hung. It was looking pretty beat up and needed a little makeover. I decided to turn my old favorite into a monogram wreath.
Supplies:
- An old wreath, or a store-bought wreath
- Ribbon or Raffia
- Large Letter
- Spray Paint
- Wire
- Hot Glue
Directions:
Spray paint the large letter with a glossy spray paint. Note: I bought a 9.5″ letter from Hobby Lobby for $2.49 and sprayed it with a burgundy color.
Add a bow or raffia around the wreath for it to hang on the wreath hook with. I tied raffia around the wreath and then tied a bow to that piece of raffia. (I forgot to take a picture of it before tying the bow on, so my hand is trying to hide the bow.) Note: Here is how to tie a bow perfectly.
My wreath of branches then needed some pruning. It had several broken branches which needed cut off. To prune it, I hung it up so that I could see just how it was going to hang.
Cut the branches all around the edges in a nice circle.
You will notice that the left side is much thicker than the right. The right side has branches that are turned down. Cut off any branches that are facing the wrong direction and thin out if one side looks thicker. Note: When thinning out only cut about one-third to halfway down the branch, not all the way to the center. You only want to thin the outline, not make the wreath look thin and scraggly.
There, the wreath is pruned just like I wanted it to look and both sides look about the same. (Remember they are branches, they aren’t going to look perfect.)
Once the letter is dry, turn it over to attach the wire. The wire should be cut in about 7″ pieces and fold each wire in half.
Heat a hot glue gun until it is the hottest it can get. Apply some glue to each corner of the letter and push the wire into the glue so that the glue runs over the top of the wire. Stabilize each wire so that it can dry with the wire standing up.
Now you need to decide where you want the letter on the wreath. Note: I held the letter up in many positions before deciding on it being centered.
Now place the letter on the wreath. Push the letter into the branches so that the wire can be seen from the back side.
Flip the wreath over carefully while holding the letter in place. Now pull the letter as close to the wreath as it can and twist the wire.
After all of the wire is twisted, turn the the edges down so that no sharp edges are exposed.
Now your wreath is all finished! Hang and enjoy your favorite wreath for another couple of years.
